China: Former Defense Ministers Receive Life Sentences in Purge
China's military court sentenced two former defense ministers, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, to life imprisonment without parole after initially handing down suspended death sentences for corruption. These actions are part of a large-scale anti-graft campaign orchestrated by President Xi Jinping within the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The purge has affected numerous high-ranking officers, with reports indicating that over half of the PLA's top leadership positions have been impacted since 2022. Officials state the crackdown is intended to root out corruption, consolidate Xi's authority, and modernize the military structure.
