Jet Fuel Shortages Threaten Europe's Summer Travel Season
Jet fuel shortages, intensified by geopolitical issues in the Middle East, pose a major threat to Europe's upcoming summer travel season. The International Energy Agency warns that Europe's heavy reliance on Middle Eastern fuel sources is jeopardizing supply, as production from these key refineries is nearly depleted. Airlines are responding to soaring fuel costs—which rose 103% by late March—by implementing significant measures. These include substantial flight cancellations and route reductions, as major carriers like Lufthansa and SAS cut capacity to manage operating losses. Experts warn that these supply constraints could force airlines to raise fares or drastically reduce air travel, impacting the region's vital tourism-driven economy.
