Former U.S. President Donald Trump spent his final morning in Beijing within Zhongnanhai, the highly secretive and tightly guarded leadership compound of China’s ruling Communist Party. During the visit, Chinese President Xi Jinping explained the choice of location as an act of reciprocity for a previous meeting hosted by Trump.
The Significance of Zhongnanhai
Zhongnanhai, which translates to 'Central Dragon Dragon's Heart,' is the central seat of power in China. It functions as the primary residence and workplace for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leadership.
- Historical Context: The area was originally an imperial garden, used by emperors for leisure.
- Modern Function: After the CCP's victory in the Chinese Civil War, Mao Zedong established it as the center of political power, deliberately choosing it over the Forbidden City to distance the new state from past imperial systems.
- Security: Access to the compound is extremely restricted, overseen by elite military units, and images are often heavily censored online.
The Exchange of Visits and Diplomacy
Xi Jinping publicly framed the visit as a gesture of mutual respect. He noted that the location was chosen in thanks for Trump hosting him at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida in 2017, which marked the first time the two leaders met.
