Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has reportedly canceled major US military deployments to Europe and ordered personnel withdrawals, citing dissatisfaction with allied contributions to European defense. These actions follow criticism from former President Donald Trump regarding the level of support from European allies.
Key Troop Reductions Announced
According to defense officials, the cancellations involve significant troop movements:
- 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team: The scheduled rotation through Poland and Baltic states, including Romania, has been halted. Some personnel already in Europe must now redeploy to the US.
- Long-Range Missile Battalion: A planned deployment of a battalion specializing in long-range rockets and missiles to Germany has been canceled, and the overseeing European command structure is being removed.
Rationale: Frustration with Allies
The reported changes are linked to perceived shortcomings among European partners, particularly Germany. Defense Department talking points suggest:
- European nationals have allegedly "not stepped up when America needed them."
- Recent rhetoric from Germany has been deemed "inappropriate and unhelpful."
- The stated goal is to signal that allies must assume primary responsibility for European defense, thereby "help[ing] restore readiness."
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell previously announced a withdrawal of approximately 5,000 troops from Germany following a "thorough review of the Department’s force posture in Europe."
