Global Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage is significantly investing in the future of African music by launching a foundation and partnering with Berklee College of Music to enhance music education in Nigeria.
Berklee in Nigeria: Intensive Training Program
The inaugural initiative is the 'Berklee in Nigeria: Tiwa Savage Intensive Music Program.' This program is set to take place in Lagos from April 23–26, 2026.
- Format: A fully funded, four-day intensive training session.
- Participants: 100 emerging Nigerian music creators.
- Significance: This marks the first Berklee College of Music event in West Africa.
Curriculum and Skill Development
The curriculum is designed to blend theoretical knowledge with practical, real-world industry skills. Participants will gain exposure to diverse areas, including:
- Music production and songwriting.
- Sound engineering and harmony.
- Ear training (identifying musical elements by sound alone).
- Music publishing, copyright, and entertainment law.
Savage noted that the program offers a comprehensive overview, allowing attendees to explore areas they might not have considered before.
Addressing Educational Barriers
Savage established the Tiwa Savage Music Foundation due to the high cost of formal music education. She highlighted that annual tuition at leading international music schools can range from $40,000 to $60,000, excluding living expenses, making it inaccessible to many young creatives across Africa.
