Sadiq Khan: Labour Must Pledge EU Rejoin at Next Election

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has publicly urged the UK Labour Party to commit to rejoining the European Union (EU) in the next general election. Speaking on Monday, Khan addressed the party's recent electoral performance while advocating for a more decisive political strategy.

Criticism of Labour's Recent Performance

Khan acknowledged the Labour Party's disappointing showing during the recent local elections. He criticized the party's current approach, urging them to adopt a bolder and more proactive stance.

According to Khan in an interview with CNBC, the party needs to improve its delivery record. He stated:

• "People are frustrated with the lack of pace of delivery."
• "My criticism of my government is that we have not been bold enough, we've not been brave enough. We are in danger of losing the next general election pretty badly."

Support for Rebuilding EU Ties

Khan welcomed Prime Minister Keir Starmer's post-election remarks, where Starmer indicated a commitment to rebuilding UK ties with the EU. These efforts include strengthening alignment with the bloc's single market and customs union.

Khan directly advised the party leadership on a key electoral promise:

• "Stand at the next general election with a manifesto with a clear promise: if Labour wins the next general election, we will rejoin the European Union."

Khan noted that a general election is scheduled to take place no later than August 2029.
