Amid renewed speculation of US-Iran peace talks, Russia has offered a diplomatic solution regarding Iran's highly enriched uranium stockpiles, while simultaneously addressing global energy concerns related to the Strait of Hormuz.
US-Iran Nuclear Dispute
The core of the current geopolitical tension revolves around Iran's enriched uranium, which is viewed by some nations as a precursor to nuclear weapon development. The United States maintains a firm stance on the issue, while Russia is attempting to mediate a resolution.
- US Demands: A White House official informed CNN that the US demands Iran completely halt its enrichment program and retrieve an estimated 460 kilograms of highly enriched uranium believed to be stored underground.
- Trump's Stance: Former President Donald Trump has rejected any proposal for a temporary suspension, insisting instead on a complete and permanent stop to Iran's enrichment activities.
Russia's Mediation Offer
Speaking after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced Russia's willingness to assist in resolving the dispute. Lavrov stated that Russia could help manage the stockpiles in ways that respect Iran's right to peaceful enrichment.
According to TASS, Russia's proposed solutions include:
- Converting the highly enriched uranium to fuel-grade material.
- Storing the material in methods acceptable to Iran.
Lavrov emphasized that Russia would accept any decision made by Iran during the peace talks, aligning with Tehran's stated goal of using enrichment solely for civilian power generation.
Global Energy Supply and China
In a separate announcement, Lavrov highlighted Russia's role in maintaining global energy stability. TASS reported that following his visit to China, Lavrov stated that Russia is providing energy supplies to China and other nations struggling with supply due to the ongoing situation at the Strait of Hormuz.
