Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Monday to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, amid ongoing discussions regarding regional and international cooperation.
Focus of Talks with Russia
According to Tehran’s ambassador to Moscow, Kazem Jalali, the discussions between Araghchi and Putin are set to focus on:
- Coordinating interactions.
- Advancing joint programs at both regional and international levels.
Strategic Partnership Between Iran and Russia
Russia and Iran maintain a long-standing partnership, with Moscow serving as a key diplomatic ally for Tehran, particularly concerning the conflict with the US.
Key aspects of this relationship include:
- Uranium Custody: The Kremlin has offered to take custody of Iran’s enriched uranium, proposing to store or reprocess it on Russian territory. This offer reportedly faced rejection from the Trump administration.
- Long-Term Agreement: Iran and Russia formalized a 20-year treaty in January 2025, designed to strengthen their economic, military, and political ties. It is noted that this agreement did not include a mutual-defense pact.
- Russian Stance: Russia has characterized US strikes against Iran as "unprovoked aggression."
Broader Diplomatic Engagements
Araghchi's visit to Russia is part of a broader international tour. Prior to his visit to St. Petersburg, he held meetings with key mediators in Pakistan and Oman on Sunday.
Separately, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov acknowledged Pakistan's mediation efforts between Iran and the US during a call with Pakistani counterpart Mohammad Ishaq Dar, while affirming Moscow's "readiness to contribute."
Intelligence Cooperation Reports
Media reports have indicated that Russia has provided Iran with intelligence regarding the locations and movements of US troops, ships, and aircraft, suggesting Moscow's increasing involvement in the regional dynamics.
