DOJ Reinstates Firing Squads, Electrocution for Federal Executions
The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced it will update its execution protocols to include alternative methods, such as firing squads and electrocution, due to challenges in acquiring drugs for lethal injections. This decision aligns with a commitment made by former President Donald Trump to resume federal capital punishment. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche authorized seeking death sentences for nine individuals after the lifting of a previous moratorium. The changes aim to ensure the DOJ can conduct lawful executions regardless of drug availability. This development follows President Biden's commutation of 37 federal death row sentences.
