Daniel Moreno-Gama, 20, was held without bail in California after being accused of attacking the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and attempting to breach the company’s offices.
Alleged Attack Details
California and federal authorities allege that Moreno-Gama traveled from Texas to San Francisco. According to a criminal complaint filed by the FBI, the incident occurred early Friday morning when he allegedly threw an incendiary device at Altman’s residence. He then reportedly proceeded to OpenAI’s offices, where he attempted to break down the doors with a chair, threatening violence against anyone inside.
San Francisco police reported that Moreno-Gama was arrested outside the company’s premises carrying additional incendiary materials and a manifesto he had written. This manifesto reportedly called for the killing of AI CEOs and their investors. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Charges and Legal Status
Moreno-Gama faces serious charges at both the state and federal levels. The San Francisco District Attorney’s office requested that he be held without bail, citing a risk to public safety. However, his attorney argued that he was experiencing an “acute mental health crisis,” and that the charges were an overreach for what was, at best, a property crime.
His arraignment on the charges of attempted murder and attempted arson was moved to May 5. Authorities are also considering potential charges related to domestic terrorism.

Company and Law Enforcement Response
Following the filing of charges, an OpenAI spokesperson issued a statement condemning the violence. While the company welcomed a “good faith debate” on AI integration, the spokesperson emphasized that there is “no place in our democracy for violence against anyone.”
The FBI had previously raided Moreno-Gama’s home in Texas on Monday, preceding the charges filed in San Francisco.
