Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a 32-hour ceasefire with Ukraine, timed to coincide with the Orthodox Easter holiday, following a prior proposal from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Ceasefire Decree
The Kremlin announced that Russian forces are ordered to halt combat operations across all fronts for the duration of the holiday. The ceasefire is set to begin on Saturday afternoon and last until the end of Sunday.
According to the official Kremlin statement, while combat operations must cease, Russian troops are required to remain prepared to repel any potential provocations or aggressive actions from the opposing side. The statement added that Russia proceeded based on the assumption that Ukraine would follow a similar example.
Ukrainian and International Context
Ukrainian President Zelensky had previously stated that he had forwarded the proposal for an Easter ceasefire to Russia through US negotiators. Zelensky emphasized the need for a period of peace, stating that the people require an Easter free from threats and a real movement toward peace.
