Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin has formally requested that the White House physician conduct a comprehensive cognitive assessment of President Donald Trump, citing concerns over the President's increasingly volatile and threatening public statements, particularly regarding the conflict with Iran.
Raskin's Demand for Assessment
In a letter obtained by CNN, Raskin, a top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, urged the White House physician to assess the President's mental capacity. He stated that the American public must be able to trust that the Commander-in-Chief possesses the necessary mental acuity to discharge the essential duties of his office, especially during times of conflict.
He specifically requested that the physician:
- Conduct a comprehensive cognitive assessment of President Trump.
- Provide the results to Congress.
- Be available to brief Congress on the findings.
Concerns Over Public Statements
Raskin noted that the President's public statements and outbursts have recently become "incoherent, volatile, profane, deranged, and threatening." The lawmaker pointed to several instances as evidence of his concern, including:
- An expletive-ridden Easter Sunday post calling on Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz.
- Comments made to children about the Iran war during the White House Easter Egg Roll.
- A statement warning that "a whole civilization will die tonight" if Iran did not agree to his terms.
Political Context and Precedent
While the White House physician previously declared Trump in "excellent health" during his annual physical, Raskin's request highlights a growing concern among Democratic lawmakers regarding the President's fitness for office. The discussion touches on the potential use of the 25th Amendment, which would require a majority vote from the Cabinet and Vice President to invoke.
Furthermore, Raskin argued that Republicans had previously set a precedent for such scrutiny. He cited actions taken by Republican leaders, including:
- Focusing on former President Joe Biden's apparent cognitive decline.
- Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer subpoenaing the White House physician regarding Biden's health.
- Judiciary Committee Chairman Jordan declaring that a president who is not cognitively fit "isn’t fit for office."
Raskin concluded by asserting that the issue of presidential cognitive fitness is a matter of "urgent and essential public concern" for both parties.
