Rex Heuermann pleaded guilty to murdering eight women, but the investigation into the Gilgo Beach site reveals multiple unresolved cases. Key figures like Shannan Gilbert, whose remains were found but not linked to Heuermann, remain subjects of investigation. Furthermore, the case of "Peaches" and her daughter, Tanya Jackson and Tatiana Dykes, was determined to be related to a domestic dispute, not a serial killer. Another major cold case involves the unidentified "Asian Doe," whose remains were found in 2011. Authorities continue to work to connect all the disparate findings at the Long Island location.

While Rex Heuermann pleaded guilty to murdering eight women, the investigation into the Gilgo Beach site reveals several unidentified remains and separate cases that remain unresolved. The discovery of bodies along Long Island's Ocean Parkway has highlighted a complex history of unsolved disappearances, separate from Heuermann's admitted crimes.
Heuermann's Conviction and Confirmed Victims
Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old architect, pleaded guilty to the murders of seven women: Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, and Sandra Costilla. He also admitted to the death of an eighth woman, Karen Vergata.
Heuermann is scheduled for sentencing on June 17, where he is expected to receive life imprisonment without parole.
Unconnected Bodies and Cold Cases
Several bodies found at the site have not been linked to Heuermann's killing spree, according to Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly.

Shannan Gilbert, a sex worker, went missing in May 2010 after visiting a client in Oak Beach. Her remains were found in a marsh in December 2011.
While she is a prominent figure in the case, officials have not connected her death to Heuermann.
An independent autopsy suggested homicidal strangulation, though Suffolk County police later stated that evidence suggested her death was likely non-criminal.
The "Peaches" Mother-Daughter Case
The remains of a woman, nicknamed “Peaches” due to a tattoo, were found in 1997. Later, in 2011, the remains of a toddler were found near Ocean Parkway.
These two individuals were identified in April 2025 as Tanya Jackson (the mother) and her daughter, Tatiana Dykes.
District Attorney Donnelly stated that Jackson and Tatiana were allegedly killed by the man she loved, not by a serial killer.
The father, Andrew Dykes, was charged with Jackson's murder, but the case against him for the child's death is proceeding slowly.
The "Asian Doe"
The skeletal remains of an individual known as the “Asian Doe” were found in April 2011 and remain unidentified.
According to Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney, the victim was an Asian biological male found wearing women's clothing.
Investigators estimate the victim died from blunt force trauma in 2006 or earlier, and believe the individual may have worked as a sex worker.
Expert Commentary on the Site
Nassau County DA Anne T. Donnelly described the area as a "dumping ground," noting that there are numerous bodies found that are not connected to the Gilgo Beach killer, emphasizing the complexity of the site.
