Swedish EV trucking firm Einride is deploying 75 electric heavy-duty trucks into Amazon's Relay freight network, marking a significant push toward decarbonizing large-scale logistics operations. This collaboration underscores both companies' commitment to electrifying the challenging sector of heavy-duty freight transport.
Scope of the Partnership
The 75 Einride electric trucks will operate within Amazon Relay, the platform that allows drivers to book and haul Amazon loads. These vehicles are specifically designated to support Amazon's middle-mile network.
- Middle-Mile Function: These trucks move goods between Amazon's various hubs, including fulfillment centers, sort centers, air facilities, and last-mile delivery stations.
- Environmental Impact: The deployment is projected to facilitate up to three million electric transport miles annually, resulting in zero tailpipe emissions.
- Infrastructure Support: Einride will also support the necessary charging infrastructure across five locations.
Technology and Management
Einride is leveraging its proprietary optimization software, Saga AI, to manage the execution of select Amazon loads. This software assists with critical functions, including charging planning for the electric fleet.
Einride CEO Roozbeh Charli stated that partnering with Amazon validates the company's technology and strategic vision by integrating it into one of the world's most sophisticated logistics networks.
Context: Electrifying Logistics
This move is part of Amazon's broader, multi-year strategy to build an end-to-end, electrified logistics network. The industry faces the significant challenge of decarbonizing heavy-duty trucking.
Amazon has demonstrated a sustained commitment to EV integration through several major initiatives:
- Past Commitments: In 2019, Amazon announced a deal with Rivian, including an investment, aiming for 100,000 electric delivery vehicles by 2030.
- Recent Deployments: In early 2025, Amazon Europe secured a large order of 200 EV big rigs from Mercedes. Furthermore, in 2024, Amazon deployed 50 Volvo trucks for its U.S. freight market operations near Southern California ports.
- Fleet Size: As of mid-2025, Amazon reported having over 70,000 owned trailers in its fleet.
Future Outlook: Autonomous Operations
While the current deal does not involve autonomous trucking, the industry is moving rapidly in that direction. Einride has recently secured approvals from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to operate autonomous vehicles on public roads in Texas, making it its fifth U.S. state approval. Einride anticipates Texas will become a core hub for its American autonomous freight operations.
Additionally, Einride plans to go public via a SPAC merger in the first half of the year, a deal expected to raise over $300 million. The company has also strengthened its governance by welcoming Amazon board member Keith B. Alexander to its board of directors.
