President Donald Trump has suggested the U.S. will allow a Russian-flagged oil tanker to deliver fuel to Cuba, potentially easing the island's severe energy shortage amid a U.S.-imposed fuel blockade.
Trump's Announcement
On Sunday, aboard Air Force One, Trump confirmed that a tanker is heading toward Cuba and expressed support for permitting oil from any nation to address the crisis. He stated, "If a country wants to send some oil into Cuba right now, I have no problem. I prefer letting it in, whether it’s Russia or anybody else, because the people need heat and cooling."
Tanker Details
- The Russian tanker Anatoly Kolodkin, carrying about 730,000 barrels of oil, was spotted off Holguín province, Cuba.
- Ship tracking site MarineTraffic indicates it may dock at Matanzas port, an oil hub, as early as Tuesday.
- Jorge Piñón of the University of Texas Energy Institute provided these details to CNN.
