CNN will host a pivotal debate for California's gubernatorial race on May 5, 2024, with Democrats worried that a crowded field might split votes and enable Republican advancement in the state's top-two primary system.
Debate Details
- Date and Time: May 5, 2024, at 6 p.m. Pacific Time (9 p.m. Eastern Time).
- Moderators: CNN anchors Elex Michaelson and Kaitlan Collins.
- Location: Los Angeles area.
- Broadcast: Part of CNN's coverage leading up to the June 2 primary.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the debate, candidates must meet both criteria:
- Polling Threshold: Achieve at least 3% support among likely primary voters in two California gubernatorial polls, or an average of 3% in two polls that meet CNN's editorial standards.
- Fundraising Threshold: Raise, contribute, or loan a minimum of $1 million specifically for the gubernatorial campaign.
- Polls used for eligibility must be publicly released between February 1 and April 27, 2024. The eligibility window closes on April 27.
Qualified Candidates
As of now, eight candidates have met the thresholds:
- Democratic Candidates:
- Xavier Becerra, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services
- Matt Mahan, Mayor of San José
- Katie Porter, former U.S. Representative
- Tom Steyer, former presidential candidate
- Eric Swalwell, U.S. Representative
- Antonio Villaraigosa, former Los Angeles Mayor
- Republican Candidates:
- Chad Bianco, Riverside County Sheriff
- Steve Hilton, former Fox News host
Political Stakes
California employs a nonpartisan primary system where the top two vote-getters advance to the general election, irrespective of party affiliation. With six Democrats and two Republicans in the race, there is a risk that Democratic votes could be divided, potentially allowing both Republicans to secure spots in the general election. This scenario could result in a governor aligned with Donald Trump, despite California's strong opposition to him in the 2024 election. Additionally, it may affect Governor Gavin Newsom's potential 2028 presidential ambitions.
Trump Endorsement
On Monday, Donald Trump endorsed Steve Hilton in the governor's race, a move that could further sway the election's dynamics.
