Gaza Conflict: Hamas and Israel Respond to Biden’s Ceasefire Proposal

The Gaza Strip may soon see an end to the eight-month-long conflict that has resulted in over 36,000 deaths and the displacement of thousands, as US President Joe Biden announces a new ceasefire initiative. The plan, which has been positively received by Hamas, calls for a six-week ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from densely populated areas, and the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The second phase will see the release of all remaining hostages, while the third phase will usher in a significant reconstruction effort for Gaza, with international support, including from the US.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated that the offensive will continue until all Israeli objectives are met, including the elimination of Hamas’ military and governmental capabilities. However, the Israeli military has halted operations in the Jabalia area of northern Gaza, signaling a potential shift towards de-escalation, even as operations in the Rafah area continue. President Biden has emphasized the importance of the proposal, stating that it would bring all hostages home, ensure Israel’s security, and create a better governance structure for Gaza without Hamas in power. The European Union has also welcomed the plan, viewing it as a significant chance to conclude the war.
