US-Iraqi Joint Operation Eliminates 15 ISIS Operatives, Injures 7 US Soldiers

On August 29, 2024, US and Iraqi forces conducted a joint operation in western Iraq, resulting in the deaths of 15 ISIS operatives. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the operation targeted ISIS leaders to disrupt and degrade their ability to plan and execute attacks against Iraqi civilians, US citizens, and allies in the region.According to CENTCOM, the ISIS members were heavily armed with numerous weapons, grenades, and explosive ‘suicide’ belts. The operation successfully eliminated the threat without any reported civilian casualties.However, the mission came at a cost to US forces. Seven US soldiers were injured during the operation, with five wounded in combat and two others injured due to falls. All injured personnel are reported to be in stable condition, with one evacuated for further treatment outside the Middle East.CENTCOM emphasized that ISIS remains a significant threat to the region, US allies, and homeland security. The US military stated its commitment to continue aggressively pursuing these terrorists alongside coalition and Iraqi partners.This operation occurs amid ongoing negotiations between Baghdad and Washington regarding the presence of anti-jihadist coalition forces in Iraq. Currently, the US maintains approximately 2,500 troops in Iraq and 900 in neighboring Syria as part of the international coalition against ISIS.
