Turkey Launches First Domestically Produced Satellite Türksat 6A, Joining Elite Space Club

Turkey has successfully launched its first domestically produced communication satellite, Türksat 6A, into space from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, USA. The launch, which was initially scheduled for July 9th at 00:20 Turkish time, faced delays due to adverse weather conditions and eventually took place at 02:30 Turkish time. This achievement marks Turkey’s entry into the elite group of 11 countries capable of designing and producing their own communication satellites. The Türksat 6A satellite, developed by Turkish engineers with an 80% domestic content rate, was launched using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. It is equipped with 20 Ku-band transponders and has a power output of 7.5 kilowatts. The satellite is expected to provide communication services, including TV broadcasting, to a wide area covering Turkey, Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia, potentially reaching over 5 billion people.Turkish Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu emphasized the significance of this launch, stating that it demonstrates Turkey’s goal of independence in the field of space and will increase the country’s communication capacity, competitiveness, and satellite service exports to the region. The satellite will be stationed at 42 degrees east longitude and is expected to be operational for at least 15 years. This project, which began in 2014 and took a decade to complete, represents a critical step for Turkey, transitioning the country from being a user of satellites to a provider of satellite services. Prof. Dr. Kemal Yüksek, Chairman of the TÜRKSAT Board, highlighted the importance of this achievement, saying, ‘TÜRKSAT 6A shows that we are taking a big step, a critical step. We are moving up to a new class.’

Key points

  • Turkey successfully launched its first domestically produced communication satellite, Türksat 6A.
