Saudi Arabia Faces Criticism as Hajj Death Toll Surpasses 1,300 Amidst Heatwave

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has reported a tragic death toll of over 1,300 pilgrims during the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage, a figure that has drawn international attention and concern. Saudi Health Minister Fahd Al-Jalajel has described the management of the Hajj as ‘successful’ despite the fatalities, emphasizing the provision of over 465,000 specialized treatment services, including 141,000 to unauthorized pilgrims. The majority of deaths, attributed to extreme heat with temperatures soaring to 51.8°C (125°F), were among unauthorized pilgrims who walked long distances under direct sunlight without adequate shelter or comfort .The crisis has particularly affected the Egyptian community, with over 660 reported fatalities. In response, the Egyptian government has revoked the licenses of 16 travel agencies involved in facilitating illegal travel for the pilgrimage. Saudi authorities have arrested several travel agents and officials for allowing illegal travel to Mecca. Criticism has been directed at the Saudi government for not doing enough to ensure the safety of pilgrims, especially the unregistered ones who lack access to air-conditioned tents and official transportation.The Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is a significant event for Muslims worldwide, attracting over 1.83 million participants this year. The Saudi government’s response to the incident has been to defend its handling of the event, stating that there was a misjudgment on the part of individuals who underestimated the risks.
